Free Phylogenetic Network Software | alternative Windows, virtual machines, and Windows emulators


Network generates evolutionary trees and networks from genetic, linguistic, and other data. Network can then provide age estimates for any ancestor in the tree.

Network 5 is 1.9MB in size and runs on Windows 10, 8, and 7. On 64-bit Windows 10 the optional MP-Postprossing step does not run; this is currently possible only on 32-bit Windows 10 with 16-bit NTVDM enabled, or on 64-bit Windows 7 and 8. Network 4 is 1.2MB in size and runs on Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000. The user guide (pdf) is 2MB in size.
Download the Network zip file, unzip to a folder of your choice, and double-click Network.exe to run. Network can run from memory stick - no Windows registry entries and no Windows Administrator required for installation.

Compatibility with other operating systems or windows emulators: Network runs on Mac and Linux with WINE Windows emulation, and on Windows installed into Parallels Desktop (Mac) or free VirtualBox (Linux, Mac). 64-bit versions of Windows 10 cannot run 16-bit apps; workaround is to enable HYPER-V and create a 32-bit Windows 10 VM. Alternatively, there is a new WINE 16-bit windows emulator for Windows 10 WineVDM which we have not tested and we would be interested to hear from users.

Network Publisher is recommended for publication quality graphics, more pie chart network functions, display of longer node names (15 characters) and link names (9 characters), network root proxy nodes, mutations per link and individuals per node, and for diagram comparison.
DNA Alignment is recommended for importing Sanger sequences (dna) or amino acid sequences into Network, helping you avoid errors.
